How relevant is this book right now? Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles. Just reading the first few lines of the introduction titled Ambassadors, caught me and drew me in with the first sentence. Read the excerpt below and tell me what you think:
About The Book
In the midst of folding laundry, coordinating carpool schedules, and breaking up fights, many parents get lost. Feeling pressure to do everything “right” and raise up “good” children, it’s easy to lose sight of our ultimate purpose as parents in the quest for practical tips and guaranteed formulas.
In this life-giving book, Paul Tripp offers parents much more than a to-do list. Instead, he presents us with a big-picture view of God’s plan for us as parents. Outlining fourteen foundational principles centered on the gospel, he shows that we need more than the latest parenting strategy or list of techniques. Rather, we need the rescuing grace of God—grace that has the power to shape how we view everything we do as parents.
Freed from the burden of trying to manufacture life-change in our children’s hearts, we can embrace a grand perspective of parenting overflowing with vision, purpose, and joy.”
My Thoughts:
I believe this book will be a tremendous resource to my family and I will use and execute these principles in my daily routine of raising and homeschooling my children.
The chapters I enjoyed reading the most were:
- Introduction to Ambassadors
- Calling
- Grace
- Authority
- Worship
- Foolishness
- False Idols
- Control
- Mercy
Let me tell you this is no easy read (not in the sense of reading) in the sense of the words pointing inward. This book truly forces you to take a deep, personal, inward look at your own heart. At the foundation of parenting we all want to be the best parents to our children, Paul Tripp takes it to a whole new level. He breaks it down to the core of parenting, how we should desire to parent the way God wants us to parent.
Each chapter takes you to a more personal level within the Word of God and parenting based on Biblical Principles. I laughed out loud a lot, because He was talking directly to me. There were so many parenting issues like:
- dealing with their heart
- identity
- foundational heart issues
- foolishness
- rebellion
- following the rules
The traditional way that parents have been handling these issues according to Paul Tripp’s 14 Gospel Principles, challenges you to look at parenting from God’s perspective. There are solid instructions on how we can point our children to a God who is full of love, wisdom, compassion, patience, mercy, grace and so much more. I believe the words of the book to be true, that God shows parents the hearts of our children and He desires for us to point their hearts and minds to Him, to mold their foundation with a heart that seeks after God and not self-centered or self-directed behavior.
We are truly stewards over the children that God has entrusted in our care. We don’t have these children by accident. Wherever you are in your parenting journey, you are not alone. God has provided us with the tools necessary to parent and guide our children with the proper instruction to grow in grace and mercy and to have a heart that longs to seek a personal relationship with Him.
I truly enjoyed reading this book, there were so many examples and scenarios that are applicable to any and every stage of parenting both to younger children, teenagers and beyond. Every parent should have this book in their parenting resource library. It has definitely been an eye-opener and a game changer for me.
