My Thoughts:
In the book Rich in Years the author addresses an issue many people would rather not talk about or don’t know how to communicate with their spouse or family members. All of us will reach old age one day hopefully, in these years we hope to have learned wisdom along the way. Sprinkled throughout the book are pictures and inspirational quotes from a variety of people that have found both peace and purpose in their later years.
In the book, Johann includes scripture references and how prayer and faith have helped him transition through this stage in his life. There are accounts of individuals throughout the book, words of wisdom and encouragement, funny stories, quotes and a wealth of information about how to accept these new changes one may encounter as they go through the aging process. Rich in Years is an easy read, a reference for anyone curious about what to expect when they reach new seasons in their life and how to accept the many different changes and phases as one ages.
Chapter Titles include:
- Growing Older
- Finding Purpose
- Finding peace
- Keeping Faith
- Living with Dementia
I enjoyed reviewing this book and found encouragement especially in the chapter Living with Dementia. Our family is experiencing this situation right now. Caring for anyone with Dementia is extremely difficult and it breaks your heart watching the decline of your family member right before your eyes. He talks about how we should enjoy the positive moments and value and cherish those afflicted by the disease. We can totally relate to the story of his church member caring for her father-in-law and how they also felt helpless caring for their loved one. We are still praying and hoping that the situation will change for the better. Hoping that peace will overrule the torment their mind is experiencing as they battle this awful disease.
